Sedna Expands AI Capabilities with Flytta Acquisition

In a significant move within the maritime technology sector, Sedna, a company known for its trade-focused communication solutions, has acquired Flytta, an AI-driven workflow automation platform. Originally developed by UK-based Casper Shipping, Flytta was designed to enhance internal processes and has since evolved into a robust tool for global trade and supply chain management.

From In-House Tool to Global Platform

Flytta's journey began as an internal project at Casper Shipping, aimed at optimizing their operations. With the help of Seer, a firm specializing in machine learning and AI, Flytta was transformed into a scalable platform that can handle the complexities of international trade. This transformation caught the eye of Sedna, whose president, Leigh Steed-Middleton, noted that the acquisition aligns perfectly with their mission to enhance the shipping ecosystem. By integrating Flytta, Sedna aims to offer more intelligent tools that convert data into actionable insights, tailored specifically for the maritime industry.

A Strategic Partnership

The collaboration between Sedna and Casper Shipping initially took shape during a project for Pavilion Energy of Singapore, now under Shell. This project involved analyzing intricate LNG reports to identify discrepancies and issues, showcasing the potential of AI in streamlining maritime operations. With this acquisition, Sedna is not only expanding its technological footprint but also establishing a new base in Middlesbrough, England, which is expected to boost their product development efforts.

New Leadership and Future Projects

Joining Sedna from Flytta are co-founders Alan Appleyard and Owain Brennan. Appleyard, who has a background in shipping, developed a keen interest in AI and programming during the pandemic while tackling post-Brexit customs challenges. Brennan brings his expertise in AI engineering to the table. Together, they will spearhead the development of a maritime-specific large language model that will enhance Sedna’s existing email platform, among other initiatives.

Transforming Maritime and Trade Industries

Michael Shakesheff, managing director of Casper Group, expressed enthusiasm for Flytta’s evolution from an internal solution to a scalable product, now poised to drive change across the maritime and trade sectors. With its integration into Sedna AI, Flytta’s automated customs workflows are already streamlining operations for clients like Casper Customs and Pentagon Freight Services.

Looking ahead, Sedna plans to roll out its AI-powered Noon Report Analysis Automation and other workflow enhancements, further solidifying its position as a leader in maritime technology innovation.
